The Evolution of Phone Storage: Welcome to the Future with Nano Memory
With the introduction of the computer and cell phone over the past few decades of the 20th century, technology started to play a more active role in our daily lives. Fast forward to 2018 and we have over 2 billion smartphone units in use all over the globe.
These handheld devices come with digital cameras, a myriad of apps and the option to have additional storage space in the form of memory cards.
Memory cards have helped overloaded smartphones operate more smoothly and store data efficiently for a while now, and the latest development is the introduction of nano-memory from international smartphone giant Huawei.
The Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card
Storing information on a Card all started when the SD Memory Card was born. It was a direct descendant of the MultiMediaCard (MMC) and was initially used as additional storage for digital cameras and personal computers. The SD Memory Card was developed in partnership by popular digital companies Toshiba, SanDisk and Matsushita.
All though it made a big impact on removable storage, there was and is no sign of slowing down.
The MicroSD Memory Card
The MiniSD and MicroSD Card designs became available in 2003 and 2005 respectively. The MicroSD Memory Card had a lasting impact on the mobile removable storage industry, with some models offering storage of up to 256 GB. That’s nuts when you think that back in the 90s, a hard drive could not even cater to that!
And now today, we have…
Huawei’s Nano Memory: A Peek into the Future
Mid-October saw an exciting announcement from Huawei. The company launched the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro range phones, which will use a Nano-Memory (NM) Card. This new storage technology is smaller, faster and comes with a larger capacity than most MicroSD products on the market. According to Huawei, users will enjoy at least 256GB of extra storage capacity, operating at an unprecedented speed of 90MB/s on transfers. It fits into a nano-SIM card slot, too, so use isn’t limited to the new Huawei Mate phones exclusively. But most importantly, it now means we can store so much more, and access information at lightning speed.
Question is, will we ever stop needing more? Probably not!
