The Future of Mobile Phones
Mobile phones have revolutionised our lives to an extent no-one could have imagined when the first generation of cell phones became accessible in the late Eighties. When Apple opened its app store in June 2008, it changed the way we use cellphones forever. And their evolution has continued in leaps and bounds, albeit with the occasional sentimental backwards glance, and of course, the reiteration of the Nokia 3310 comes to mind. Phones have become smaller, thinner, faster, smarter, more intuitive and, without a doubt, indispensable. Let’s take a look at what the future of mobile phones will bring.
While manufacturers keep working to improve batteries, their efforts to create faster processors only drain the batteries more quickly. In the decades to come, we can expect to see phones that run on nanobatteries, solar power and hydrogen. Some even predict phones charged by kinetic energy.
Improved durability and flexibility
Smashed screens and cracked casings will be history in the coming years as manufacturers work to strengthen mobile phones. One innovation in the research stage is self-healing screens – but that’s still a long way away.
Developers are also looking into flexible materials that will enable us to fold up a phone before stashing it in a pocket or handbag.
With every new device, mobile phone manufacturers improve the graphics capabilities, which opens the door to even more sophisticated virtual reality experiences. As graphics become more sophisticated, virtual reality will become increasingly immersive. We can’t wait to see where that takes us because the possibilities and opportunities created by these developments will be infinite.
The rise and rise of the virtual assistant
Artificial intelligence (AI) will play an increasingly important role in the design and use of future mobile devices – possibly even making buttons redundant eventually. In the decades to come, as AI is developed, Siri, Cortana and co will become increasingly intuitive as they become more able to recognise patterns. These virtual assistants will be proactive rather than reactive, anticipating our needs.
While many people are wary of the changes AI will bring and how it will change our world, most don’t realise we are already using it; there’s little to be afraid of and much to be excited about.
It’s going to be thrilling to watch mobile phones develop in the coming years. It’s impossible to know exactly what’s coming, but one thing is for sure, the mobile phones of the future will be smarter and a great deal more intuitive because there’s no stopping innovation.
